Magellanic penguins are the highlight of this tour, but you'll also have the fascinating opportunity to see blackbrowed albatrosses, skuas, terns, cormorants, and dominican gulls soaring in the surrounding skies.
Magdalena Island, located 16 nautical miles from Punta Arenas, is a protected area within the Los Pingüinos Natural Monument, covering 97 hectares including the nearby Marta Island, which is a sea lion colony.
Upon landing on Magdalena Island, you’ll experience not only a visual spectacle but also a world of unique smells and sounds.
Every year, from September to April, thousands of Magellanic penguin pairs nest on the island. Their numbers peak in January and February when the chicks have hatched, along with juveniles along the coastline. The trail leading to the lighthouse passes through hundreds of penguin burrows, allowing for close-up views of these flightless birds.
The lighthouse itself is an attraction — a National Historic Monument offering panoramic views of the island and its surroundings. Visitors typically spend about one hour on the island.
