CONDOR WATCHING

Nowhere else on the planet offers such an accessible, fast, and protected spot to see and photograph the world’s largest flying bird—the famous and majestic Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus). Just a 60 to 70-minute drive from Punta Arenas, you’ll reach the largest condor sanctuary in Chilean Patagonia, which hosts an average of 40 to 50 condors throughout the year. It is located at Olga Teresa Ranch in the Río Verde district.
The excursion begins in the briefing room with a cup of coffee and cookies, where you’ll watch a presentation about the Andean condor. The standard visit includes a short hike of less than 500 meters on flat terrain to reach the base of the cliff where the condors roost. Researchers will use a powerful telescope to show the condors, and the condor conservation and research project provides visitors with a pair of professional-quality binoculars.
Meanwhile, the researcher will explain the biology and behavior of the condors, using the telescope to point out individuals that have been identified and named. There are opportunities for trophy photos through the telescope using your smartphone or camera.
Visits can be scheduled at any time of day, but the best chance to see condors is in the afternoon when the birds return to the sanctuary to rest and sleep after feeding.
