Fuerte Bulnes [Shared excursion]

The route follows the legendary Strait of Magellan, where you can observe a wide variety of seabirds such as oystercatchers, Canada geese, several species of ducks, cormorants, and on a lucky day, possibly dolphins and sea lions. The park is located 52 km (32 miles) south of Punta Arenas and offers a range of activities:
 
Visitor Center
Situated at the highest point of the park, the Visitor Center houses a modern multimedia exhibit that, through art and science, explains the formation of the territory, the local wildlife, and the history of human presence in this part of the world. It features a spacious terrace with stunning views of the Strait and a lookout to the “Puerto del Hambre.” The center also includes a café and a gift shop.
 
Fort Bulnes (National Historic Monument)
Rebuilt between 1941 and 1943, Fort Bulnes has long been a “must-visit” for residents of the Strait of Magellan. Originally founded in 1843, it was the first Chilean settlement in the area and paved the way for the founding of the city of Punta Arenas five years later.
 
Wind Forest Trail
This trail starts at the O’Higgins Lighthouse (located behind Fort Bulnes) and crosses a forest of Magellanic Coihue trees that grow perpendicular to the ground due to the strong prevailing winds. The trail leads to the Strait Viewpoint, where you can watch passing ships, birds, dolphins, and whales.
 
Coast Trail
This trail winds through the forests and rocky shores around the Fort, passing strategically placed viewpoints that offer unparalleled views of the surrounding landscape.
 
Woodpecker Trail
This beautiful trail connects the Visitors Center with Fort Bulnes, passing through native tree species that are home to woodpeckers. If you listen carefully, you can see and hear these birds along the way.
 
Puerto del Hambre
The city of Rey Don Felipe (Puerto del Hambre) was founded in 1584 by Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa on behalf of the Spanish crown to claim and colonize the Strait of Magellan. Years later, the tragic fate of the city was recounted by one of the few survivors. To promote preservation, prevent deterioration, and allow research work without interference, this site is currently closed to the public.
